Three Men Charged for Distributing “Death to Gays” Leaflets

(The Advocate) -- Three men appeared in court Friday to face charges of stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation after handing out leaflets calling for the execution of gays outside a U.K. mosque.

Imagine how many fundamentalist Christians would be arrested in this country if we had laws against "stirring up hatred."

GOP Rep. Randy Forbes: Put "In God We Trust" On Every Public Building

(JoeMyGod) -- In recent years, Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) has introduced a House resolution calling for the United States to recognize that it is a "Judeo-Christian nation." Another Forbes resolution called on the federal government to recognize that "the Holy Bible is God's word." Now he wants the feds to acknowledge that "In God We Trust" is the nation's official motto. Which it already is. But Forbes also wants the slogan plastered everywhere, as his resolution demands it appear "in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions." The resolution has 24 House cosponsors, including two Democrats.

BRITAIN: Gay & Straight Couples Launch Challenge To Marriage Laws

(JoeMyGod) -- Led by activist Peter Tatchell, on Wednesday eight British couples, four gay and four straight, will file a challenge to Britain's marriage and civil partnership laws with the European Court of Human Rights.
Peter Tatchell is coordinator of the Equal Love campaign, which seeks to end sexual orientation discrimination in both civil marriage and civil partnership law."Since November, four same-sex couples were refused marriage licenses at register offices in Greenwich, Northampton and Petersfield. Four heterosexual couples were also turned away when they applied for civil partnerships in Islington, Camden, Bristol and Aldershot," added Tatchell.

"All eight couples received letters of refusal from their register offices, which we are now using as the evidential basis to challenge in the European Court of Human Rights the UK's exclusion of gay couples from civil marriage and the prohibition of straight civil partnerships. Since there is no substantive difference in the rights and responsibilities involved in gay marriages and heterosexual civil partnerships, there is no justification for having two mutually exclusive and discriminatory systems.
The petitioners contend that Britain's "separate but equal" system violates the European Convention On Human Rights, to which the United Kingdom is a signatory.

Civil Unions Bill Fails in Wyoming

(The Advocate) -- A same-sex civil unions bill narrowly failed in the Wyoming house judiciary committee on Friday.

The 5-4 vote followed votes in the senate last week for a constitutional amendment against marriage equality, and in the house for a bill to prohibit recognition of same-sex marriages and civil unions from out of state. Also on Friday, the house judiciary committee outright rejected a marriage equality bill without a vote.

SHORT HIGHLIGHTS - Colorado civil unions kick off press conference

(JoeMyGod) -- Infamous anti-gay activist Stephen Green, who is well known as a British version of Peter LaBarbera, is being divorced by his wife. Because he's been beating her with a piece of wood.

Caroline Green was often punished by her husband Stephen for failing to be a dutiful, compliant wife, but his final act of violence against her — the one that prompted her long-overdue decision to divorce him — was all the more chilling because it was coldly premeditated. Stephen Green wrote a list of his wife’s failings then described the weapon he would make to beat her with. ‘He told me he’d make a piece of wood into a sort of witch’s broom and hit me with it, which he did,’ she recalls, her voice tentative and quiet. ‘He hit me until I bled. I was terrified. I can still remember the pain. ‘Stephen listed my misdemeanours: I was disrespectful and disobedient; I wasn’t loving or submissive enough and I was undermining him. He also said I wasn’t giving him his conjugal rights. ‘He even framed our marriage vows — he always put particular emphasis on my promise to obey him — and hung them over our bed. He believed there was no such thing as marital rape and for years I’d been reluctant to have sex with him, but he said it was my duty and was angry if I refused him.
Green's wife also claims that their son had to be hospitalized after a beating from him.
RELATED: Last month the BBC raised the ire of LGBT activists when they interviewed Green as an "opposing voice" in a story about the birth of Elton John's son. Green has publicly endorsed Uganda's plan to execute homosexuals and his group, Christian Voice, has advocated for the overturn of Britain's laws against marital rape, saying that the Bible demands that all women must submit sexually to their husbands. Green has been the subject of numerous praising posts on Peter LaBarbera's site.

GLAAD To NBC: Apologize For Offensive Transgender Skit On SNL

(JoeMyGod) -- GLAAD is asking for an apology from NBC after this weekend's airing of a Saturday Night Live skit that mocked transgender women.

The piece was a mock commercial for estrogen replacement therapy and featured men with facial hair wearing dresses, meant to represent transgender women. This segment cannot be defended as “just a joke” because there was no “joke” to speak of. The attempted comedy of the skit hinges solely on degrading the lives and experiences of transgender women. Dehumanizing holding people up for ridicule simply on the basis of their identity fuels a dangerous and hurtful climate and puts people in danger, especially given how infrequently the media shines a fair and accurate light on the lives of transgender people.
GLAAD wants the clip removed from Hulu and excised from future reruns of the episode. The clip is on YouTube (for the moment) and can be viewed on NBC's site.

Dueling Letters to the Supreme Court: This Week in Prop 8 for Jan 31

Sunday, January 30, 2011

(JoeMyGod) -- According to a pastoral letter issued by Archbishop Michael Miller and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the only kind of fucking that is holy is vaginal procreative fucking. No blowjobs, no butt sex, please!

Married people living chastely can have vibrant sex lives. In the relationship between a man and a woman, chastity helps them love each other as persons rather than make each other an object of pleasure or satisfaction. Despite what the media and Hollywood suggest, the value of sexual intercourse does not lie in recreation, or physical gratification. Any physical pleasure should lead toward the ultimate expression of love between husband and wife, the total self-giving of one person to another. Sexual intercourse in marriage can be so intimate that it becomes an emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual experience. It strengthens and completes the bond of marriage. That is why the sexual act has to be unitive and procreative and why some kinds of sexual activity are not chaste. Though pleasure may be present, some acts are a misuse of sex when they fall short of what God intends.Maggie will be so pleased!

SOUTH CAROLINA: Woman Murders Dog For Chewing On Her Bible

(JoeMyGod) -- A South Carolina woman says that God told her to murder her nephew's dog because it chewed on her bible.
Miriam Fowler Smith, 65, told cops on Monday that she hung and burned her nephew's pit bull after the animal took a bite out of her bible. She claimed God urged her to kill Diamond, a 1-year-old female dog, because the animal was a "devil dog" and would hurt neighborhood children. Smith was arrested on Sunday and remains in Spartanburg County jail. She could face faces 180 days or up to five years behind bars if she's convicted with felony animal cruelty. She does not have a lawyer yet. Authorities said Smith confessed to wrapping an extension cord around Diamond's neck, hung the animal from a tree, and then set the pup on fire.

A Chicken Chain’s Corporate Ethos Is Questioned by Gay Rights Advocates

(New York Times) -- ATLANTA — The Chick-fil-A sandwich — a hand-breaded chicken breast and a couple of pickles squished into a steamy, white buttered bun — is a staple of some Southern diets and a must-have for people who collect regional food experiences the way some people collect baseball cards.

...Nicknamed “Jesus chicken” by jaded secular fans and embraced by Evangelical Christians, Chick-fil-A is among only a handful of large American companies with conservative religion built into its corporate ethos. But recently its ethos has run smack into the gay rights movement. A Pennsylvania outlet’s sponsorship of a February marriage seminar by one of that state’s most outspoken groups against homosexuality lit up gay blogs around the country. Students at some universities have also begun trying to get the chain removed from campuses...

Dan Cathy Responds To The Charge His Family's Company Is Antigay

(JoeMyGod) -- "In recent weeks, we have been accused of being anti-gay. We have no agenda against anyone. At the heart and soul of our company, we are a family business that serves and values all people regardless of their beliefs or opinions. We seek to treat everyone with honor, dignity and respect, and believe in the importance of loving your neighbor as yourself. We also believe in the need for civility in dialogue with others who may have different beliefs. While my family and I believe in the Biblical definition of marriage, we love and respect anyone who disagrees. [snip]

"Chick-fil-A's Corporate Purpose is 'To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us, and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.' As a result, we will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family. This decision has been made, and we understand the importance of it. At the same time, we will continue to offer resources to strengthen marriages and families. To do anything different would be inconsistent with our purpose and belief in Biblical principles." - Chick-Fil-A president Dan Cathy, claiming to have ended his company's support of the anti-gay marriage movement.

DADT: Commandant and SMMC's Message to Marines

Gay Marine’s husband surprised at respect shown by Naval Academy

(Chicago Sun-Times) -- John Fliszar had a heart attack in 2006 and was rushed to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

“When I was in the emergency room with him, he asked me to promise him, if he died, to make sure his ashes were interred in the Naval Academy,” said Mark Ketterson. “He loved that place. He very much wanted to be there.”

Fliszar, a Marine aviator who served two tours in Vietnam, survived that heart attack. But last July the Albany Park resident suffered another one that killed him at age 61.

Hoping to fulfill Fliszar’s wishes, Ketterson contacted the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and told them that Fliszar, Class of ’71, had wanted to have his ashes interred at the USNA’s Columbarium, a serene white marble waterside crypt next to the school’s cemetery.

... Ketterson sent a copy of the marriage license. That changed everything...

FLORIDA: House GOP Speaker Seeks To Enforce Gay Adoption Ban

(JoeMyGod) -- Even though district courts have overturned Florida's ban on gay adoption, state House GOP Speaker Dean Cannon wants Gov. Rick Scott to enforce the ban still on the state books.
Cannon said the Legislature may reassert its position affirming the prohibition if that becomes necessary, but is awaiting word whether the Scott administration will continue to enforce the ban. “The tactical calculus is to make a change [in the law] would almost imply that you agree that there was some flaw identified by the Third DCA,” Cannon said of the Legislature’s options after the Third District Court of Appeal overturned the law last year. “Because that’s just in one district, it may make sense to wait and see if that Third DCA opinion is eventually brought up with another case and either overturned or affirmed by the Supreme Court,” he said. “Until we know how the governor and DCF secretary are going to apply it, it’s not a foregone conclusion that the Legislature should step in,” he said. “If we think we should, we’re certainly prepared and willing to do so.” Asked if the governor should enforce the law, Cannon replied, “Absolutely.”

Earlier this month Tea Party-backed Gov. Rick "Medicare Fraud" Scott tipped his hand on gay adoption when he appointed an anti-gay adoption activist to head Florida's Department of Children and Families.

Gays Seeking Asylum in U.S. Encounter a New Hurdle

(New York Times) -- ...“Judges and immigration officials are adding a new hurdle in gay asylum cases that an applicant’s homosexuality must be socially visible,” said Lori Adams, a lawyer at Human Rights First, a nonprofit group, who advises people seeking asylum based on sexuality. “The rationale is that if you don’t look obviously gay, you can go home and hide your sexuality and don’t need to be worried about being persecuted.”

Ninth Circuit Court Denies Request To Suspend LCR's DADT Lawsuit

(JoeMyGod) -- Late yesterday the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the federal government's request that they suspend the Log Cabin Republicans' lawsuit seeking the repeal of DADT.
The opposed motion to hold these appeals in abeyance is denied. The briefing schedule is reset as follows: the government's opening brief and excerpts of record are due February 25, 2011; Log Cabin Republicans' answering brief and supplemental excerpts of record are due March 28, 2011; and the government's reply brief is due 14 days after service of the answering brief. The pending motions filed by proposed intervenor Joseph Zernik shall be addressed by separate order.

Suits on Same-Sex Marriage May Force Administration to Take a Stand

(New York Times) -- WASHINGTON — President Obama has balanced on a political tightrope for two years over the Defense of Marriage Act, the contentious 1996 law barring federal recognition of same-sex marriages. Now, two new federal lawsuits threaten to snap that rope out from under him.

Johann Hari: Why is it wrong to protect gay children?

(The Independent) -- To justify their discrimination against gay people, these few homophobes concoct a scenario in which they are The Real Victims.

I am exhausted. I have spent all week trying to brainwash small children into being gay, by relentlessly inserting homosexuality into their maths, geography and science lessons. Their little eyes widened when the gay algebra lesson started, but it worked: their concept of “normal sexual behaviour” has been successfully destroyed. It’s all part of the program brilliantly co-ordinated by the Homintern to imposed The Gay Agenda on Every Aspect of British Life.

That, at least, is what you would believe if you had read some of Britain’s best-selling newspapers this week, or listened to some prominent Tory politicians. The headlines were filled with fury. The Conservative MP Richard Drax said gays were trying to impose “questionable sexual standards” on kids, while the Daily Mail said we were mounting a massive “abuse of childhood.”

...Don’t demand the right to spit in the face of gay people, and claim you’re being picked on when you’re asked to stop.

INDIANA: Lambda Legal Settles Prom Lawsuit On Behalf Of Trans Student

(JoeMyGod) -- Lambda Legal has settled its lawsuit against an Indiana school district after a 2006 incident in which a principal physically blocked the door of a high school prom in order to prevent a transgender student from attending in a dress. Via press release:
"Gary School Corporation's new policies and trainings will help to ensure that other students don't face discrimination because of who they are or what they wear," said Christopher Clark, Senior Staff Attorney in Lambda Legal's Midwest Regional Office in Chicago. "It is unfortunate that Gary School Corporation has spent almost four years defending a discriminatory policy. The message for schools across the country should be clear - they should adopt and follow dress code policies that respect the rights of all students, and they should let all students attend the school prom without discrimination based on gender identity or expression."
The lawsuit was settled for an "undisclosed amount on terms agreeable to all parties." Finally, some good news today!

Hawaii Senate Passes Civil Unions

(The Advocate) -- The Hawaii senate passed a civil unions bill on Friday that, unlike a previous civil unions bill, will likely make its way to a supportive governor.

It's identical to the bill passed last year.  That one passed in both the Hawaii house and senate, but Republican governor Linda Lingle vetoed it.  Thankfully, Lingle is no longer in office and the current governor is more supportive.

Scott Lively's bizarre response to the murder of David Kato

(The Boston Globe) -- After the brutal murder of a Ugandan gay rights activist Wednesday, a Massachusetts preacher accused of helping incite anti-gay sentiment during a trip to the African nation responded to the killing with a feeble, callous statement. The pastor, Scott Lively, also offered his own bizarre theory about who may have killed activist David Kato by bludgeoning him to death with a hammer.

...But in a statement posted on the website Defend the Family today, the Springield pastor made no mention of his 2009 trip, nor did he condemn the murder or offer his condolences. Lively also said he would "caution the media against assuming Cato’s [sic] murder was a hate crime."

Instead, Lively suggested Kato may have been killed by someone with whom he had been romantically involved, despite the fact that no one familiar with the case has suggested Kato was killed by a gay person, let alone someone with whom he had had a sexual relationship. There remains a "possibility" Kato was "killed by a 'gay' lover," Lively wrote, and likened Kato's death to that of Carlos Castro, a Portuguese journalist who was allegedly beaten to death and castrated by a male model in New York City earlier this month. The link between Kato and Castro — besides the fact that they were both openly gay men who had been brutally murdered — is unclear. But Lively has linked homosexuality to violence in the past. In his book Pink Swastika, Lively blames Nazi violence on homosexuality.

Lesbian Students Question Sudden Policy Change

(The Advocate) -- A lesbian high school couple in Champlin, Minn., were told that they cannot walk into a school dance together after Anoka-Hennepin school district administrators changed rules to make students walk in one at a time instead of in pairs.

LOUISIANA: Gay Man Brutally Beaten With Billiards Cue Stick In Hate Crime Attack

(JoeMyGod) -- Yesterday a 52 year-old gay man suffered grievous facial injuries after a patron at a Shreveport, Louisiana bar attacked him with a billiards cue stick because he is gay. Witnesses say the two men hadn't even spoken before the attack.
Security personnel at the Sandbar held the alleged attacker, William Payne until police arrived. Payne was arrested and charged with attempted 2nd degree murder and the commission of a hate crime. "It was totally 100 percent a hate crime for this sexual orientation," said Sandbar manager Tim Huck. The bar provided police with video surveillance. Huck says it's disturbing, and shows Payne who is a large man, breaking the cue stick over victim John Skaggs' face with one powerful blow. "His hand was all the way back, and he's swinging like a baseball bat, after three aggressive steps in," said Huck. Shreveport police believe that the video will be powerful evidence of the alleged attack, and management at the Sandbar believes it will also help distinguish between a crime and a hate crime. "At no point in time had he talked to the man that attacked him, bumped him. After watching the video and from witnesses they hadn't even made any form of eye contact or anything," said Huck.

The bar manager says the victim was a regular patron who "never bothers anyone."

Iowa Senate Says No To Putting Gay Marriage Up To Popular Vote

(Des Moines  Register) -- A symbolic vote on taking the first small step to ban gay marriage failed in the Iowa Senate on Thursday.

The motion senators actually voted on was whether to break traditional Senate rules and overrule a procedural decision by a majority party leader, but it failed 26-24, strictly along party lines.

Maggie Gallagher: Ladies, Butt Sex Is The Wrong Way To Please Your Man

(JoeMyGod) -- "Anal sex is painful, unsanitary, unsatisfying for women, and creates unique risks for serious physical diseases (if you doubt me, go read the Wikipedia entry on the subject) because the anus is not designed for sexual intercourse, increasing the risk of torn flesh and the intermingling of bodily fluids -- blood, semen, fecal matter -- that can spread an astonishing variety of diseases. The female partner is far more at risk than the man in these encounters. This should be a feminist issue. But women are doing it to please their boyfriends. Because we have created a sexual culture that empowers young males (even as it stunts their incentives to grow to become successful, confident and happy family men) and disempowers women." - Maggie Gallagher, in a Real Clear Politics column against abortion.

Let this be a warning to straight people who ignore the professional homophobes and refuse to take a stand against them. These people won't be satisfied with merely hating on the gays. If they are not stopped, they will soon be climbing through your bedroom window to police what you do. They want to believe they have all the answers, and they are prepared to force their views onto everybody, not just gays.

(Pink News) -- Two men in Derby are the first to be charged under new laws against stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.

It reportedly said that gay people should be executed and the pair are also accused of pushing it through letterboxes.

Scuffles at funeral of Uganda gay activist

MUKONO (Reuters) - Scuffles broke out between locals and friends of a murdered Ugandan gay activist at his funeral on Friday after the pastor conducting the service berated gay people and villagers refused to bury the coffin.

It is shockingly cruel that this pastor would use David Kato's funeral as an opportunity to lash out at gays.

It seems that it's not good enough for this pastor that David Kato was murdered.  He has to go even further and spit on Kato in death and call it his religion.  That is disgusting.

Brannon Braga on "Star Trek"s Lack of Gay Characters: "Not a Forward Thinking Decision"

(AfterElton) -- When it comes to specific television shows and movies that have lacked gay visibility over the years, the Star Trek franchise has probably received the most scrutiny — and criticism — from After all, despite having produced more than a dozen feature films and 726 episodes over the course of six series (including the 22-episode animated series) the franchise has never managed to include an out gay character in a movie or series.
This despite the fact that in 1991 Gene Roddenberry told The Advocate that the fifth season of The Next Generation would at least show gay crewmembers as part of ship life. Unfortunately, Roddenberry died that year and none of the subsequent episodes featured gay people at all.

In 2008, the fan series Star Trek Phase II produced an online version of a gay-themed episode originally intended for The Next Generation and written by David Gerrold. And in 2008, I asked Roberto Orci and Alexander Kurtzman if the new Star Trek movie would finally go where no Star Trek had gone before by including a gay character. The answer was no, but perhaps the next one would and that "it needed to be addressed."

At this month's Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles, I had an unexpected and brief opportunity to chat with Brannon Braga, one of Star Trek's most prominent writers and producers, about why the franchise had done so poorly with with gay visibility and whether or not his new show Terra Nova would do anything to improve American television's terrible track record with the issue...

Notice how smug this man is when he claims that the marriages of gay people are counterfeit.

French watchdog says no to gay marriage

PARIS (AP) — France's law prohibiting gay marriage does not violate the constitution, the country's top constitutional watchdog ruled Friday as it noted that parliament was free to make new laws on the subject.

...Corinne Cestino and Sophie Hasslauer, who have lived together for 15 years and have four children, had challenged the constitutionality of France's law banning the gay marriage.

...The issue exposes a paradox in France: While the country often has an anything-goes attitude to romance and sexuality, it can be conservative with family values. The couple and advocacy group Act Up Paris hoped France would soon join European Union partners — including Spain, Belgium and Netherlands — that have legalized same-sex marriage.

Pastor Jim Garlow: This Is What Obama Should Have Said At His SOTU

(JoeMyGod) -- "I have tragically hastened to destroy the No. 1 preserver of all that is good in society – the family, consisting of a mother and a father. In my need to be politically correct, and my desire to garner more votes from the nuclear family attackers, I was drawn in to their errors and sins of redefining the family. I am ashamed of this. I am sorry. I ask for forgiveness.

"I have helped to demoralize the military that defends us. I ran roughshod over 59% of the US Marines when I forced my social experimentation upon them, coercing them to accept lifestyles as normative, with no thought of troop readiness and cohesion. I was drawn in to the errors, lies and sins of political correctness, at the expense of truth. I am ashamed of this. I am sorry. I ask for forgiveness." - Manhattan Declaration co-author Pastor Jim Garlow, from his reimagining of the State Of The Union Address, were the president not Marxist Kenyan friend-to-sodomites.

RELATED: In the past Garlow has announced that Satan loves gay marriage, that God passed Prop 8 because he fasted, and that the nation's Christians should pick up a musket and rise against homosexuals.

CDC Issues Interim PrEP Guidance

(JoeMyGod) -- Last last year researchers announced some success in preventing HIV among gay men who were taking a daily dose of the HIV medication Truvada. The concept of warding off infection by pre-dosing with a medication is known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP.) But alarmed by the prospect for abuse, yesterday the CDC issued some interim PReP guidance as studies continue.
CDC says it wanted to fend off improper use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (or, more catchily, PrEP) as it and other agencies work on more detailed guidelines, which will take “several months.” It says that the drug should only be used in men who have sex with men, since studies in other high-risk groups such as IV drug users are still underway. And it should be used only in high-risk men (with multiple partners or partners from an area with a high prevalence of HIV infection), who are most likely to benefit. Also, the drug isn’t the equivalent of the morning-after pill for HIV; it’s meant to be taken daily. “Support for adherence to the prescribed medication regimen must be a routine component” of PrEP, the CDC says. (In the study, the risk of HIV infection was reduced just 21% in men whose adherence was less than 90%, compared to a 73% lower risk of infection for those with adherence of 90% or better.) And other preventive measures, such as condom use, should continue to be taken.

The wholesale cost of Truvada in the United States is $1000 for a month's supply, a cost unlikely to be covered by insurance when the drug is used as a preventive. In some countries, Truvada costs as little as $12/month.

Alan Chambers Responds to David Kato's Murder

(JoeMyGod) -- "The leadership of Exodus international and its member ministries are grieved over the tragic murder of Ugandan gay activist David Kato and we send our sincerest condolences to his family & friends. [snip] Exodus International calls on President & Mrs. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to lead their government into an era of treating all of their neighbors as they would like to be treated. It is abominable that a nation with Christian leadership would endorse or allow anyone to be brutally murdered. In the words of Jesus Himself, those who are without sin cast the first stone. Exodus International condemns the murder of David Kato and calls for justice to be fairly applied, not covered up, when the murderers are caught." - Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, whose board of directors member Don Schmierer is one of the three American evangelicals blamed for the explosion in anti-gay violence and legislation in Uganda.

Don Schmierer, member of Exodus board of directors: I spoke to help people and I’m getting bludgeoned from one end to the other.

This was Schmierer's response to criticism over participating in a conference in Uganda headed by Scott Lively that led to the new wave of homophobia in Uganda and the murder of David Kato.  Kato was literally bludgeoned to death.

Bill Donohue: Gay Activism Gives You AIDS

(JoeMyGod) -- "The man who made the vile video died of AIDS. Had he followed the teachings of the Catholic Church on sexuality, he would be alive today. Instead, he blamed the Church. Catholicism is the answer, not the problem." - Catholic League president Bill Donohue, complaining that those Jews at the New York Times are exploiting the Smithsonian censorship scandal.

Remembering Coretta, Waiting for Bernice

(The Advocate) -- Coretta Scott King, the beloved widow of Martin Luther King Jr., died five years ago this week. While King stressed that her husband's vision of equality extended to gays, her daughter Bernice doesn't take that view.

...Bernice King is not her mother's daughter.

In December 2004, King joined Bishop Eddie Long — who is now facing lawsuits alleging that he used his riches and episcopal authority to lure young men into sexual encounters — in leading a march that opposed gay marriage. Just months before the march, which started at the King Center in Atlanta, she announced, “I know deep down in my sanctified soul that [Dr. King] did not take a bullet for same-sex unions.” And nearly a decade earlier she had decried “men who accept homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle.”

Clinton Condemns Uganda Murder

(The Advocate) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday condemned the murder of Ugandan LGBT rights activist David Kato and called for a swift and thorough investigation of his death by local authorities.

Anti-Gay Activist Denies Hand In Murder: I'm The One Being Bludgeoned

(JoeMyGod) -- As I noted here, Exodus International board of directors member Don Schmierer was part of Scott Lively's three-day conference in Uganda, where Schmierer advised Ugandans on how to turn their gays kids straight. But don't go blaming David Kato's murder on HIM, he was only trying to help. In fact, HE is the victim here.
On Thursday, Don Schmierer, one of the American evangelicals who visited in Uganda in 2009, said Mr. Kato’s death was “horrible.” “Naturally, I don’t want anyone killed but I don’t feel I had anything to do with that,” said Mr. Schmierer, who added that in Uganda he had focused on parenting skills. He also said that he had been a target of threats himself, recently receiving more than 600 hate mails related to his visit. “I spoke to help people,” he said, “and I’m getting bludgeoned from one end to the other.”

This person has no shame. A man is dead--he was literally bludgeoned to death--after Schmierer and his antigay Christians went to Uganda and whipped up homophobia, and Schmierer claims he's the one who has been bludgeoned.

Yet another example of a supposed Christian hating on the gays and spreading misinformation.

(JoeMyGod) -- Yesterday Ugandan LGBT activist David Kato was bludgeoned to death in his home just weeks after his photo was emblazoned on the cover of a local newspaper with the accompanying headline "HANG THEM!" The newspaper articles and Kato's murder came after months of international outrage over Uganda's proposed and still-pending "kill gays" bill, legislation that orders the death penalty for homosexuals in some cases and life imprisonment in others.

The inspiration for Uganda's gay death penalty bill, and surely, Kato's murder, arises from the work of American evangelists, chief among them the repulsive anti-gay activist Scott Lively, whose infamous book The Pink Swastika blames the rise of the Nazi Party and the Holocaust on gay men. One year ago, the New York Times profiled Lively's hand in Uganda's burgeoning pogrom against homosexuals, which began after Lively hosted a three-day meeting attended by thousands of Ugandan police, teachers, and politicians.
The three Americans who spoke at the conference — Scott Lively, a missionary who has written several books against homosexuality, including “7 Steps to Recruit-Proof Your Child”; Caleb Lee Brundidge, a self-described former gay man who leads “healing seminars”; and Don Schmierer, a board member of Exodus International, whose mission is “mobilizing the body of Christ to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality” — are now trying to distance themselves from the bill.

“I feel duped,” Mr. Schmierer said, arguing that he had been invited to speak on “parenting skills” for families with gay children. He acknowledged telling audiences how homosexuals could be converted into heterosexuals, but he said he had no idea some Ugandans were contemplating the death penalty for homosexuality. “That’s horrible, absolutely horrible,” he said. “Some of the nicest people I have ever met are gay people.”

Mr. Lively and Mr. Brundidge have made similar remarks in interviews or statements issued by their organizations. But the Ugandan organizers of the conference admit helping draft the bill, and Mr. Lively has acknowledged meeting with Ugandan lawmakers to discuss it. He even wrote on his blog in March that someone had likened their campaign to “a nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.” Later, when confronted with criticism, Mr. Lively said he was very disappointed that the legislation was so harsh. Human rights advocates in Uganda say the visit by the three Americans helped set in motion what could be a very dangerous cycle. Gay Ugandans already describe a world of beatings, blackmail, death threats like “Die Sodomite!” scrawled on their homes, constant harassment and even so-called correctional rape.

Yesterday Scott Lively's "nuclear bomb" against Ugandan gays went off in the form of the iron bar which crushed the skull of David Kato. In some countries, it's possible that Lively would be under arrest today. Also complicit in this murder is Peter LaBarbera, who for years has worked to publicize and praise Scott Lively's evil agenda. Then there's Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council, who last year paid lobbyists $25,000 to convince members of Congress to block a planned resolution denouncing Uganda's gay death penalty bill. And let's not forget Pastor Rick Warren, who supported, funded, appeared with, and publicized the work of Uganda's leading anti-gay activist, Pastor Martin Ssempa.

Today we mourn David Kato, a brave LGBT activist who paid the ultimate price in defense of his brothers and sisters. But we've also got start looking at some serious legal remedies to the actions of American anti-gay activists in other countries. Outside of the United States, many legals systems are not so constrained by the American concept of freedom of speech. What can we do to leverage that difference to end this madness? Lawsuits? The Hague?

First Gay Studies Course Offered in Italy

(The Advocate) -- ...According to the Associated Press, the course was the brainchild of Giacomo Moro, a 23-year-old biology major. He conceived of the course in response to a death threat from a man who saw him hanging fliers on campus for the gay association.

...The AP calls the course “something of a revolution” for Italy, where the Roman Catholic Church dominates cultural life despite the potential for popular left-wing politician Nichi Vendola to become the country’s first out gay prime minister.

... Nearly 200 students showed up for the first day of class last week. The course could be repeated another semester if there is interest.
